Morin Khuur Craftsmanship is an element of the “Traditional Craftsmanship” domain of the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The tradition has been studied and documented to a certain extent.
The Morin Khuur is a traditional Mongolian stringed musical instrument consisting of three main integrated parts: the neck, the sound box, and the bow. The upper end of the neck features a carved horse-head ornament and tuning pegs. The sound box, known as the tsar, serves as the resonating chamber that amplifies and produces the instrument’s sound. The instrument has two strings, traditionally made of horsehair, extending from the upper part of the neck to the lower part of the sound box. The strings are held away from the neck and sound box by upper and lower bridges, known as tevkh or marnu. The instrument is played with a bow, traditionally strung with horsehair, which is used to draw across the strings and produce sound.
